Death in Ramadan – Why so valued

The month of Ramadan is a time for deep reflection and self-discipline as Muslims restrict themselves from food, water, immoral behavior, and other urges from dawn till dusk. Death is inevitable. The Quran states, “every soul tastes death” and from there, our life will begin in the Hereafter. We take with us nothing to our graves except the beneficial knowledge that we left behind for others to follow and benefit from, a sustainable charity that continues to help people after our passing, and our children who offer prayers for themselves and us and seek forgiveness.

Is it true?

A commonly raised question is that what is the reward for passing away during the blessed month of Ramadan? Does the soul of the deceased person go straight to Heaven to meet with the soul of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his Sahaba?

What Hadith Reveals about death in Ramadan?

It is mentioned in a Hadith, that during the month of Ramadan, the gates of hell are shut closed and the devil is chained whilst the doors of heaven fly open. This hadith helps us deduce that the one who passes away during Ramadan is protected from punishment by the Mercy and Grace of the Almighty.

Imam Ahmed quotes in his Hadith compilation that the messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Whoever professes La Ilaha Illah (there is no god besides Allah) seeking the pleasure of Allah and happens to pass away in that state, he will enter paradise. Whoever fasts a day seeking the pleasure of Allah and happens to pass away in that state, he will enter paradise.’ Thus, a person who dies whilst in a state of fasting will also enter Heaven.

Regarding the question about the departed person’s soul meeting his or her predecessors, if he or she is successful in correctly answering the questions in the grave and is of good fortune, he or she will be able to meet whomever they wish to meet.

Being on the Righteous Path Holds much Importance than the time of Death

The promise of entering Heaven upon dying during the holy month of Ramadan is for those who do righteous deeds and that his or her final deed was a righteous one as well. It does not simply work for dying in Ramadan. Furthermore, there is no mention of the possession of a specific virtue for entering Paradise without being brought to account. Regardless, one should always seek repentance for Allah is the Most Beneficent, the Almighty, and the Most Merciful.
